Many Arizonians Arrested For DUI on July 4 Weekend

ABC News reports that state records show an increase in DUI arrests for the July 4 weekend, compared to the number of Arizona drunk driving arrests on July 4 weekend 2009.

The numbers from the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety show that there were 434 people arrested statewide by DUI enforcement officers over the holiday weekend. This marks almost 100 more arrests from last year's fourth of July weekend.

What's probably most striking about the statistics from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety is the number of people that were arrested for extreme DUI. This past weekend, there were 126 people cited for extreme DUI, meaning that there blood-alcohol was measured to be over .15 percent. In fact, the average blood-alcohol level for the arrested impaired driver was .15 percent, which is almost twice the legal limit.

Arizona DUI enforcement officers also arrested 52 people for drug charges and issued 269 citations to people who were not wearing seat belts when they were pulled over. Yet the increased number of DUI arrests and citations does not necessarily mean there are more impaired drivers on the road this year. DUI Task Force officials say that the increased number of arrests is probably due to the increased number of law enforcers that are looking out for drunk drivers.

In a press release law enforcement officials said, "These impressive statistics are the result of the dedication and training of police officers, sheriff deputies, volunteers, and other law enforcement personnel that comprise the DUI Task Forces throughout Arizona."
