If you're caught driving under the influence by Arizona authorities, perhaps you should hope that you're not in the city of Scottsdale.
According to KTAR, Arizona DUI attorneys say that Scottsdale is the toughest city in the state when it comes to DUI penalties and DUI enforcement. While DUI laws in Arizona are the same throughout the state, the law is certainly applied differently in each city within the state. DUI Attorney Jay Lawrence told KTAR says that the city of Scottsdale stands out as the location where DUI suspects have the most difficulty getting off with a lenient punishment.
"That's not being picky or saying they are doing anything wrong. That's just their choice. They are extremely difficult to deal with. I practice there quite a bit," Jay Lawrence told KTAR.
In an earlier blog post, we wrote that the city of Scottsdale has seen a slight increase in arrests this year. This is likely due to the efforts of the East Valley DUI Task Force, which is a joint effort by multiple police agencies in the area, including Scottsdale police officers. The task force has become known for conducting DUI checkpoints in the Scottsdale area throughout the year.
Let's not forget that the state of Arizona also has some of the toughest DUI laws in the country, compared to the DUI laws of the other 49 states. Arizona has penalties that mandate jail time even for first-time DUI offenders and requires the installation for an ignition interlock device for all people that are convicted of DUI.
